單刀直入,繼續來談談英國專有的英語詞彙,本日主題涵蓋廣泛:一個「五花八門」的詞:Coach。 跟香港朋友說起Coach這字,想起的大多是手袋的品牌,有留意籃球等運動的會認出它另有「教練」的意思。但你若在英國聽到Coach這個字,十有八九的意思是指…巴士。甚至火車。 小學時當然已學過,巴士是bus,火車是train。在英國,市內短距離運輸的巴士和香港一樣叫作Bus。Coach指的是城際間的長途巴士,又或者五十座的旅遊巴。 但在談論鐵路時,Coach的意思就變成火車車卡:例如你會在時間表上看到”formed of 8 coaches”,指的是列車共有八節車廂。 為何coach一字意思由旅遊巴到教練一般天馬行空?那要由中世紀的馬車開始講起。
